Keith Ellison (D-Minn) moves to adjourn House to protest Obamacare vote

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., shut the House down for 15 minutes Tuesday by forcing a roll call vote on his motion to adjourn in protest of tomorrow’s expected vote on a GOP measure to repeal President Obama’s health care law.

Ellison called the GOP repeal measure – the 31st attempt to repeal “Obamacare” in whole or in part – “political theater at its worst.”

Noting that the GOP measure has no chance in the Senate, Ellison accused Republicans of wasting time.

“I move to adjourn,” he said, “because we’re not doing anything anyway.” The floor debate on the “Repeal of ObamaCare Act” is being led today by Minnesota Republican John Kline.

“This is political theater at its worst because Americans are out of work and this body isn’t doing anything about it. Everyone here knows that the President can’t just whip up a jobs bill out of thin air. Congress has to pass it, but Congress wont pass it because they’re busy doing political stunts and that is a shame.”

“He believed that it was a moral issue, that it defined the character of who we were as a society, who we were as a country and that decent, quality, affordable health care should be a fundamental right and not a privilege. And now all three branches of our federal government have affirmed that right and I think if Teddy were here he would tell us now it’s time to roll up our sleeves, get to work, fully implement the law and move on with the business of our country.” - Vicki Kennedy, widow of late Senator Ted Kennedy

I’m very disappointed in the ruling. I think the chief justice had to contort logic and reason to come up with this ruling. So one man decided against the dissenting opinion, against what I, you know, thought were his — his principles and judicial jurisprudence, he decided to leave this up to the American people. So now the stakes of this election could not be higher.

Translation: I’m very disappointed that Chief Justice Roberts did not act as the extension of the Republican Party I believed him to be. Judicial independence, what’s that?

Not only did most framers support these federal mandates to buy firearms and health insurance, but there is no evidence that any of the few framers who voted against these mandates ever objected on constitutional grounds. Presumably one would have done so if there was some unstated original understanding that such federal mandates were unconstitutional.

From The Maddow Blog:

I saw a familiar headline over the weekend: “Most Americans oppose health law but like provisions.” It’s been the only consistent trend when it comes to polling on the Affordable Care Act: the public has been conditioned to reject “Obamacare,” but Americans don’t really know what’s in it. When asked about the provisions of the law, however, they’re quite popular.
That was the case in 2009, 2010, and 2011. And the new Reuters-Ipsos poll suggests nothing has changed.

“Ultimately, I am confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress.”
