Not even kindergarteners learning their A,B,Cs are safe. We heard after Columbine that it was too soon to talk about gun laws. We heard it after Virginia Tech. After Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek. And now we are hearing it again. For every day we wait, 34 more people are murdered with guns. Today, many of them were five-year olds. President Obama rightly sent his heartfelt condolences to the families in Newtown. But the country needs him to send a bill to Congress to fix this problem. Calling for ‘meaningful action’ is not enough. We need immediate action.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday discussed the need for politicians to “stand up” and better enforce existing federal gun laws.
“Somebody’s got to do something about this and this requires, particularly in a presidential year, the candidates for President of the United States to stand up and say once and for all, yes, they feel terrible, yes it’s a tragedy, yes we have great sympathy for the families, but it’s time to stand up and do something.”

I happen to think that Obama’s been a much better president than people give him credit for. He’s in a very difficult situation. You’ve got a Congress that is very polarized and partisan. There are problems all over the world. Our two big markets, China and Europe, are in big trouble… And I agree with the President on many of the social issues. I’d like to see him do more, but you’d always like to see him do more… It’s easy to say that the President should be doing more, but he’s got a lot of things to balance.

New York City is shutting down its subway, bus system as of noon Saturday; commuter rail lines serving Connecticut, Long Island and Westchester as well; all construction projects in NYC suspended ahead of Hurricane Irene

Philly and NJ also plan to shut down their systems. And Bloomberg just ordered residents in low-lying areas to evacuate. No word on DC yet, which is being pretty piss-poor about planning for this.
